Ask Aunt Foley: Santa Paws

Dear Aunt Foley:  I just heard of this wonderful man named Santa Claus who bring us gifts.  Being a puppy I don’t know anything about him.  Can you fill me in? - Heidi

Dear Heidi:  Oh I can tell you all about Santa.  He is the most wonderful man.  He brings you presents on Christmas for being a good dog, or in your case, since you’re a puppy he brings you gifts just for showing up.

But there are some myths that I can expose about Santa.  He does not live in the North Pole.  He used to but it recently became beachfront property.  Now he lives up in the mountains here at Rainbow Bridge, the only human allowed to go back and forth.  And he doesn’t have tiny reindeer.  He has a group of really big greyhounds.  And they don’t fly.  When you string a bunch of greyhounds together and get them running at full speed they just naturally rise off the ground.

Plus those elves?  No real.  When you get a present at Christmas know if was made with love from your Bridge Angel friends.  You ask for what you want in your dreams, those dreams come to us, we make what you want and pass it on to Santa.  He’s really just a big, fat UPS driver who works once a year and luckily does not wear those silly shorts.

But here’s a sad fact.  For the most part the only dogs to get gifts from Santa are in homes.  Those in shelters usually don’t get anything because Santa is only allowed to enter homes, not businesses or government buildings.  So those dogs have to rely on other dogs to be their Santas.

So maybe this year you can forgo one of gift and ask your parents to bring a donation to the shelter so a dog there can have a present too.  And to remind you the Bridge Angels have a song for you.

It's Christmastime; there's no need to be afraid
At Christmastime, we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the dogs at Christmastime

But say a prayer to pray for the other ones
At Christmastime
It's hard, but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
And it's a world of being alone
Where no one even cares you were ever born

And the Christmas bells that ring there
Are the clanging chimes of loneliness
Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you
And there won't be love in the shelter this Christmastime

The greatest gift they'll get this year is love
Oh, where no one ever goes home, no bed, no toys, no snugs
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

Here's to you, raise a glass for ev'ryone
Here's to them, sleeping on a blanket in a cell
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

Love all dogs
Love all dogs

Love all dogs
Let them know it's Christmastime
Love all dogs
Let them know it's Christmastime

  1. Santa does wear shorts here.

We'll have to think up something good for our local shelter.

  3. We give either money or food and toys every year to our local Humane Society. Mom also has a friend that gives a (sizable!!! :-) ) donation every Christmas to a local rescue in our mom's name. Mom says that's the best gift of all.

  5. We all love Santa. He brings us new toys even when we've been a tiny bit bad sometimes. Next week Mom and Dad will take a big box of treats and a couple blankies to the shelter for the dogs who are waiting there.
